What is the Sensory Lab?
The Washington Park Sensory Lab is a temporary pop-up installation that curates a sensory experience that invites you to slow down and interact with the surrounding landscape. Audible and local community partners are hosting events in the park throughout the outdoor season. Any community partner is welcome to hold/host events in Washington Park following the required protocol to submit for an event.
How do I host an event at Washington Park?
Anyone who would like to hold an event at the Washington Park Sensory Lab should submit a permit request through the City of Newark and also submit a request to be in the online event calendar. A media kit will be provided once your event has been approved - please include the Washington Park Sensory Lab logo in the promotion of your event.
How do I submit a permit application to the City of Newark?
Permit applications should be fully completed and submitted to Melvin Waldrop. It’s important to provide all information requested, as blank responses could delay the permit approval process. Please note that there is a permit fee for each hosted event.
How do I submit an event or weekly programming activity to the central calendar?
Please submit your event to the Washington Park Sensory Lab calendar here. Once your event is confirmed it will be published to the calendar. When promoting your event please include the hashtag #washingtonparknewark.
What kind of event can I create?
Ideal programming upholds the mission of the Washington Park Sensory Lab to be inclusive and entertaining. Events can include concerts, fitness classes, festivals, movie nights, and more.
How do I schedule clean–up for my event?
Once your event is approved and on the programming calendar, you will need to put in a request with the City of Newark Parks & Grounds department of your scheduled event and request a trash pickup. Event host(s) can pick up cardboard receptacles with garbage bag inserts the day before the event (or Friday for weekend events) at the Newark Recycling Department – 62 Frelinghuysen Avenue. It will be your responsibility to separate the trash bags from the receptacles and bring both to the curbside on Washington Street @James Street for next day trash pickup.
Will security be provided for my event?
Security will be available upon request. Once your event has been approved by the City of Newark, please contact Sergeant Marizta Gonzalez at the Newark Police Outside Employment, to secure uniformed officer(s) onsite for your event. (973) 733-7930
How would I get folding chairs or seats for my event?
The Newark Downtown District can provide seating for your event. Once your event is approved, please contact them directly here.
